The Omega-6:3 ratio explained (and why it’s important)

 In Uncategorized

As a society, we tend to only know the basics of nutrition and health. Like, ‘eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly’. Rarely do we delve into the multitude of questions like the Omega-6:3 ratio and the best essential vitamins and minerals, while understanding the role of each one.

We live passively, often only exploring the (seemingly) small details that impact our health when something is wrong.

Constantly tired? Always getting a cold? Wondering why you’re bloated? You might be surprised what’s actually causing it. And yes, the problem (and solution) start on your plate and have a lot to do with you Omega-6:3 ratio.

Speaking of essential nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids provide a long list of health benefits. From your vision and teeth and cells to muscles, we need omega-3 for our bodies to function well. But enjoying fatty fish-based meals is only part of it.

The Omega-6:3 ratio is what really matters.

In today’s fast food favouring world, we’re consuming too much omega-6 (and not enough of the precious omega-3). In our bodies, EPA and DHA found in omega-3 have numerous positive effects on the body – and vice versa for omega-6.

This is why creating a balance between the omegas will help to achieve optimal health.

Levelling the seesaw of omegas.

Our diets are omega-6 heavy, so it’s important to reduce processed foods, salad dressings, and vegetable oil. Simultaneously, increase your intake of seafood, certain seeds (like chia, hemp and flaxseed), vegetables, fruits, berries, and wholegrains.

But the answer isn’t just the food choices we make. Even with supplements, people are sitting at a 13:1 ratio. The desired number should be 3:1, so we have a long way to go.

Only 5% of Europeans have a 3:1 ratio. For Australia its only 2%, while only 1% of Americans have a 3:1 ratio.

You’re probably thinking all fish oil products can support a healthy Omega-6:3 ratio. In Europe, it’s not mandatory to indicate that a product contains omega-3 fatty acids in the form of natural triglycerides or has artificially-modified ethyl esters.

Worryingly, the products that contain more than 38% of omega-3 are chemically modified.

Virgin fish oil is also problematic, in that it doesn’t go through any purification process.

The solution? The liquid form of purified fish (oil) because of its active ingredients.

Zinzino’s BalanceOil is a synergistic blend of high-grade fish oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA – blended with premium extra virgin olive oil, high in polyphenols.

Test your ratio, first.

Use Zinzino’s dry blood-spot BalanceTest to discover what your omega-6:3 ratio is, before starting the BalanceOil treatment. The results will show you whether your diet is balanced (or unbalanced), through the lens of an essential fatty acids reading.

As the saying goes, it’s all about Balance.
