New studies link Omega-3 with an increase in sperm count
A large study in Denmark has drawn a correlation between omega-3 supplements and improved sperm count in men. This isn’t the first study to explore the link between testicular function in healthy men and supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids.
Couples wanting to have a family are familiar with omega-3 supplements, as pregnant women often take them throughout their nine months (for the positive effects on the baby’s wellbeing). But only recently are we hearing the benefits of Omega-3 supplements in men, prior to conception.
The most recent study of 1,700 men found that men who consumed omega-3 supplements for more than 60 days had a higher sperm count. Scientists also linked larger testicular size and a healthier profile of two hormones related to sperm production – findings not seen in any other nutrient.
There’s no other way to put this. ‘Down there’, the potential was bigger and better for those who took Omega-3 supplements.
In another research study, Omega-3 supplements and dietary intake of the essential fatty acid can improve semen quality parameters in infertile men (and those undergoing fertility treatment).
And back in a 2012 study, a correlation was shown between men who consumed a high intake of fat (fried foods) and lower total sperm count (and performance). It also found that men who took on the Omega-3 diet resulted in better formed sperm.
So, there’s no doubt about it. There’s a proven connection that will be explored deeper in coming years.
But before you put all your eggs in one… basket
We can’t ignore the importance of the overall health and wellbeing of both men and women when exploring the impact of any nutrient. The fact is, we can all benefit from adding Omega-3 fatty acids to our diets.
Yes, they’re good for fertility and sperm count, but also your heart and brain. And you don’t need to be a couple trying for a baby to benefit from Omega-3 supplements. Even the slightest shift in your diet can throw off the natural balance of your Omega-6:3 ratio.
Start with the Balance Test to find out where you stand with your Omega-6:3 ratio. Then, you can create an individual treatment plan to get your body back into balance, with either the range of oil flavours or capsules.
With the birds and the bees… it’s fishies first.
